Before & After Porcelain Crowns
Before Getting Porcelain Crowns:
- Oral Health Assessment: Your dentist will first assess your oral health before starting the procedure of porcelain placement. X-rays will be taken by the dentists to get an overview of your oral structure.
- Color Selection: You will have the opportunity to discuss and choose the desired shade for your porcelain crowns.
After Getting Porcelain Crowns:
- Sensitivity and Discomfort: It is very common to experience mild sensitivity or discomfort (which should subside in a few days) following the placement of porcelain crowns. If your sensitivity remains for a longer duration, you must consult your dentist.
- Oral Hygiene: It is advised by all dentists to maintain oral hygiene after the placement of porcelain crowns. Your dentist can share some tips to maintain your oral hygiene.
- Avoid Chewing Hard Foods: Don’t eat hard or sticky foods after the placement of porcelain as they could damage the crowns.
- Regular Dental Visits: Schedule regular check-ups with your dentist to monitor the condition of your porcelain crowns.
What does getting a crown involve?
At your first appointment, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth with a putty-like material, which will then be sent to a lab. Then, you’ll have to wait about three weeks for the crown to be made. During the first appointment of getting a crown for your teeth, your dentist will numb your mouth with a local anesthesia and mold your mouth into the shape that’s required for the crown.
The first appointment will include taking several highly accurate molds (or impressions) that will be used to create your custom crown. This appointment takes about an hour and a half.
At the second appointment, your dentist will place the permanent crown and match it to your natural teeth. This crown will help your tooth protect it from damage or decay. A cap is used to cover an entire tooth to restore its appearance and function.

The second appointment of dental crowning includes making sure that:
- Your tooth is completely clean
- There are no cavities
- The tooth isn’t cracked,
- Your mouth is healthy enough for a crown (through X-rays).
